Elizabeth “Liz” Gushee joined the University of Miami Libraries (UML) in 2018. As the Associate Dean (AD) for Digital Strategies & Scholarly Communication, she provides leadership and direction for the Libraries’ digital scholarship and research services, digital infrastructure, and technology planning. She serves as the primary spokesperson for the Libraries’ digital strategy and service plan to the university community, and she oversees the Libraries’ digital initiatives and the development of the Libraries’ content management systems and repositories. Liz provides leadership within the Libraries on the creation and curation of digital objects for research and learning, as well as oversees data and research information management in support of the evolving research needs of faculty, students, and staff. Areas of the libraries under Liz’s leadership include Digital Initiatives, Library Information Technology, and Research Data & Open Scholarship. Liz also serves as the Libraries’ Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs.

Liz previously served as Head of Digital Collections Services at the Harry Ransom Center at The University of Texas at Austin (2011-2018). Prior to UT, Liz held positions at the University of Virginia, the University of Richmond, and the Library of Virginia.

Liz earned a B.A. in History from Earlham College and an M.L.I.S. from The Catholic University of America. She is a graduate of the Leading Change Institute (2016), University of Miami’s LEAD program (2023), and the UCLA Library Senior Fellows program (2022). Recent service to the profession includes the HathiTrust Program Steering Committee and the HBUC Library Alliance+CLIR+DLF Authenticity Project.

Liz’s research interests include open access, scholarly communication, archives, delivery of cultural heritage within online environments, photography, and the vernacular architecture of the southern states.
