1. Can I use my cane card/cane ID to print?

You can print from any iMac to the Uprint system using your cane ID/card for your basic printing needs. The Digital Media Lab's large and small format printing services operate independently from Uprint, therefore we will post charges to your UM account. For IDR transactions, please contact the Media Lab.

2. Can I use Uprint?

Yes. You can use our iMacs to print to the Uprint service. But only for your basic printing needs. This does not include large and small format printing services.

3. Does the Media Lab carry Pro Tools?

Currently, the Media Lab does not offer Pro Tools software. We offer Garage Band, Adobe Audition, and Soundtrack Pro.

4. Does the media lab convert /digitize VHS, cassette tapes, vinyl, 8 track and/or 8mm film?

Yes. The Digital Media Lab can digitize VHS tapes, cassette tapes and vinyl records. Currently, we cannot digitize/convert 8mm film or 8 track tapes.

5. Does the Media Lab cut posters and banners?

Patrons have access to cutters available in the lab. All DML patrons will be responsible for their own paper cutting needs.

6. Does the media lab design print/publishing material?

The Media Lab does not provide design services. We have the tools you can use to design your own work, and we offer instruction on how to use those tools.  Our staff is prepared to offer tutoring and guidance.  UM patrons also have access to Lynda.com tutorials.

7. Does the media lab give classes?

We offer tutorials in person and through the video learning website Lynda.com. The university has an account with Lynda.com that enables our patrons to be able to log in and learn through the university’s subscription. You can log into or register for Lynda.com through the Digital Media Lab homepage.

An employee will be happy to give you tutoring and guidance on how to use the equipment and programs in the Digital Media Lab if requested.

8. Does the media lab have chargers?

MacBook and iPhone chargers are available for lending at the Circulation Desk.

9. Does the media lab have scanners?

Yes. The Digital Media Lab has a total of four scanners:


(1) Epson Expression 10000 XL – Large format scanner

12.2" x 17.2" with 2400 dpi resolution and a 3.8 Dmax and 48-bit color;


(3) Epson Photo 4990 - Small format scanners,

8" x 10" scanning capability, 4800 x 9600 dpi resolution, 48-bit color depth, and 4.0 Dmax

10. Does the media lab laminate?

We do not provide lamination services.

11. Does the media lab print flyers?

Unless your flyers require a photo finish you can print them using the regular printers in the libraries on the Uprint system.

12. How do I pay for print jobs or reformatting projects?

Print costs are posted on your UM account. If you wish to pay cash or with a credit card, the Circulation Desk can process the payment.

Interdepartmental requests must be accompanied by an IDR. The Media Lab will provide an invoice if needed. Please contact the Media Lab to coordinate this transaction.

13. How do I reserve Digital Media Lab equipment?

The Media Lab offers equipment rentals such as cameras, tripods, camcorders, lighting kits, green screens, and audio recording equipment online at the digital media lab website under the “equipment” section.



14. How do you calculate printing cost?

Large format printing service cost is determined by linear length. The rates varies depending on the paper roll we use:

  • 24 inch roll: $0.50 per linear inch
  • 44 inch roll: $0.75 per linear inch

I.E. – A poster that measures 24” x 36” will cost $18.00

Small format photo printing service is charged per sheet

  • 8.5 x 11 sheet: $2.50 each
  • 11 x 17 sheet: $5.00 each
  • 13 x 19 sheet: $7.50 each

15. I am trying to make a reservation but the reservation database is not responding.

This often occurs when you attempt to make a reservation within 24 hours of your requested date for pick up.  Please contact the lab for assistance.

16. What does the media lab print?

We print large format projects (posters, banners, etc) and small format printing (photos). The Media Lab uses high gloss/photo paper.

17. What equipment does the Digital Media lab lend?


The Lab also lends these small items for a period of 3 hours:

  • Headphones
  • SD and memory card readers
  • Microphone headsets
  • External DVD write/read drives
  • USB and Firewire cables
  • Wacom tablet

18. What is the cost for digitization/reformatting projects?

  • Instruction = Free!
  • Academic Project = Free!
  • Personal Project: Do it yourself  = Free!
  • The DML can do it = $9.00 per hour of work 

Conversions often take a few days. If you need something completed immediately, staff will be happy to instruct you so that you can convert it yourself in the lab.

19. What kind of paper do you print on?

We use high quality glossy and/or photo paper.
